Awaiting Surgery

Getting the right cover

When you’re going through the process of getting a diagnosis, or undergoing treatment for a condition, you may feel that a holiday is just what the doctor ordered.

Find out what level of cover we can give you from pre-diagnosis to treatment and beyond.

When you’re ready, speak to our friendly team for free to find out what level of cover we can offer you.

Who can we offer cover to?

Before we can offer anybody cover, we have to first ask if it’s safe for you to travel.

If you can answer all of the following questions with a yes for everybody who you’re creating a policy for, then we should be able to offer you cover even if you’re awaiting a diagnosis or surgery:

  • You are fit and able to undertake your planned trip.
  • You are NOT travelling against the advice of a doctor (or would be travelling against the advice of a doctor had you sought their advice)
  • You are NOT travelling with the intention of having medical treatment, tests or consultation abroad.
  • You are NOT travelling having been given a terminal prognosis.

Depending on where you are with your diagnosis and treatment plan, we may be able to offer you a varying level of cover. Where we can’t offer you cover, we may be able to signpost you to trusted insurers.

Here’s a handy summary to explain what cover options we can and cannot provide you with through your diagnosis journey:

I have an undiagnosed condition or am awaiting test results:

If you have an undiagnosed condition that’s being investigated, then we may still be able to cover you.

We just won’t be able to cover any of your pre-existing medical conditions.

This means that you will still be covered for medical emergencies and cancellation, as long as they aren’t related either directly or indirectly by your pre-existing or undiagnosed conditions.

You’ll also still be covered for everything else – including baggage, lost money and passports.

I am awaiting a medical procedure or surgery:

If you’re awaiting a medical procedure or surgery for a diagnosed condition, then you may still be covered.
Where you’re awaiting surgery, we can still offer you full cover if you’re having, or even if you’ve been fully signed off from having, one of the following medical procedures listed below:

Adenoidectomy Arthroscopic ligament repair
Arthroscopy of ankle, knee or hip Audiogram
Blephoplasty (Ptosis repair) Carpal Tunnel Syndrome release
Cataracts removal Circumcision
Colposuspension Correction of hydrocele
Digital excision of arthroplasty (hammer toe repair) Dupuytren’s repair
Endovenous laser treatment of varicose vein(s) Excision of benign skin cyst
Excision of benign skin lesion Excision of skin tag
Excision of skin wart Ectropion or Entropion repair
Excision of basal cell carcinoma of the skin Excision of epididymal cyst or ganglion cyst
FESS (Functional endoscopic sinus surgery) Hip or knee replacement

Osteotomy for hallux valgus Reduction turbinates of nose
Septoplasty or Septo-rhinoplasty Strabismus correction
Thyroidectomy for non-cancerous disease Tonsillectomy
Varicose vein ligation or stripping

If you’re having a medical procedure or surgery that’s not listed above, then we may still be able to offer you cover – but it wouldn’t cover any pre-existing medical conditions.

I’ve recently had a medical procedure or surgery but haven’t been signed off:

If your recent surgery is listed above, then good news! Even if you haven’t been fully signed off yet, we’ll be able to cover you for everything apart from cancellation and having to cut your holiday short.

If your surgery isn’t listed above, then we also won’t be able to cover any medical expenses or the costs associated with getting you back to the UK (repatriation) that are a result of pre-existing medical conditions.

If you have an accident or need to make a claim that isn’t related to your conditions, then you would still be covered for those medical expenses.

It’s a condition of our insurance that if you’re awaiting sign off or follow ups relating to a procedure that you make sure:

  • All surgical wounds have fully healed and no longer require dressing.
  • All external stitches, sutures, or staples have been removed.
  • There have been no complications, or infections after having had the procedure.
  • Your mobility is no worse than it was before you had the procedure.
  • You obtain a letter from your GP (doctor) confirming that you are medically fit enough for this trip.
  • You understand that this policy will not cover the cost of any follow-ups required during the insured trip.
