What is winter sports travel insurance?
Winter sports travel insurance gives you protection for skiing, snowboarding and other snow activities. It’s included as standard with our Comprehensive annual policies (up to 2 trips, 21 days combined) and available as an add-on for single trip policies. Cover includes things like slope injuries, lost or damaged equipment, and piste closures.
What does winter sports insurance cover?
With winter sports cover included, you’ll be protected for:
- emergency medical care and repatriation after a ski or snowboard injury
- lost, stolen or damaged equipment – whether it’s your own or hired gear
- ski pass protection if your lift pass is lost, stolen or damaged
- ski pack reimbursement for unused ski school or instructor fees if you’re too unwell or injured to participate
- equipment delay if your gear is delayed by 12+ hours on the outward journey
- piste closure cover for travel to another resort if yours is closed for over 24 hours
- avalanche or landslide delays that affect access or cause extra accommodation costs
This ensures your ski holiday is covered from the airport to the slopes – so you can enjoy your time in the snow without worry.
What activities aren’t covered?
Certain high-risk sports aren’t included, such as:
- bobsleigh, luge or skeleton
- heli-skiing
- freestyle, stunt or competitive skiing
- ice hockey
- ski-dooing or snowmobiling
- ski jumping or ski racing
If you’re unsure whether your activity is covered, you can always check with us before you book.

Built-in medical cover
Your medical needs shouldn’t stop you from exploring the world. If you have pre-existing conditions – like asthma, diabetes or high blood pressure – we can normally include them in your travel insurance.
When you get a quote, you’ll complete a short medical questionnaire so we can tailor your cover.
With Staysure, you’ll get:
- emergency medical and repatriation cover included as standard
- 24/7 medical emergency helpline, wherever you are in the world
- A discount on medical loading costs if you have private medical insurance with coverage when abroad of a minimum of €55.000
Even if you already have private medical insurance, it won’t cover trip cancellation, travel delay, missed departures or lost, stolen or damaged baggage. That’s where we step in.

Planning more than one trip?
There are 2 main types of travel insurance to choose from:
Single trip travel insurance
Covers you for one holiday – whether that’s a week on the slopes or a summer break abroad. Protection includes cancellation, lost baggage and emergency medical cover. Winter sports cover is available as a single trip add-on when you have a Comprehensive policy.
Annual multi-trip travel insurance
Perfect if you travel often and take several holidays in a year. If you’re under 71, a Comprehensive annual policy includes cover for up to two winter sports trips, with a maximum of 21 days in total.

Add optional extras to your cover
Your winter sports cover is just the start – you can personalise your policy with optional extras that give you the right protection for the way you travel:
- Winter sports cover – already included with Comprehensive annual policies (up to 2 trips, 21 days combined), or available on single trips if you’re aged 70 or under.
- Cruise cover – add this when buying if your holiday includes time at sea as well as on the slopes, with protection for medical care, missed ports and more.
- Excess waiver – remove the standard policy excess so you won’t need to pay towards approved claims.
- Single item cover – increase cover for valuables up to €1,000 per item.

How to buy winter sports travel insurance online
Getting covered for your ski trip or winter holiday is quick and straightforward:
- Tell us about your trip – share your travel details, ages and destination.
- Choose your cover level – pick the policy that suits your holiday plans.
- Add winter extras – such as ski equipment cover, piste closure or protection for unused ski passes.
- Get set for the slopes – your policy documents will arrive by email, ready before you travel.
Get cover from the moment you book your trip
Make sure you’re protected from the moment you book your winter holiday. Cancellation cover begins straight away, so if your plans change before you travel, your costs are covered.
Why buy early?
- Cover starts the day your policy begins.
- Protection if you need to cancel before you travel.
- Extra cover for ski-specific risks like piste closure, lost or damaged equipment, and unused ski passes.
Your insurance runs from the day you book until the day you return home – so you can enjoy your time both on and off the slopes knowing you’re protected.

How much does winter sports travel insurance cost?
The price of adding winter sports cover depends on:
- your age (cover available up to 70 for winter sports)
- your destination (skiing in the US and Canada is often more expensive)
- trip length
- pre-existing medical conditions
- whether you add it to a single trip policy or it’s included with your annual Comprehensive policy
What’s not covered?
Your winter sports cover won’t include:
- travelling abroad for planned medical procedures
- incidents linked to alcohol or controlled substances
- off-piste skiing or snowboarding outside recognised resort boundaries
- activities in avalanche areas rated 3 (considerable) or higher
- pre-existing conditions not declared at the time of purchase
Always check your policy documents so you know exactly what’s included.
