What is family travel insurance?
Family travel insurance gives you one simple policy that protects everyone on your trip. Instead of arranging separate cover for each traveller, you can insure the whole household together – saving time, money and hassle.
Your policy can include two parents (or legal guardians) and their dependent children under 18 (or under 21 if in full-time education). It can also cover grandparents, blended families, or even two adults travelling together.
With Staysure, family policies:
- cover trips of up to 104 days on a single trip policy
- protect travellers up to age 85
- include cover for most pre-existing medical conditions
- offer flexible options, whether you’re travelling once or many times a year
Family holidays are about making memories – not worrying about the what-ifs. With one policy, you’ll all have the same reliable protection from the moment you book until you arrive safely home.
What does family travel insurance cover?
With Staysure Ireland, your family travel policy gives you cancellation cover as soon as you buy it, and protection for everything else once your holiday begins. Here’s what’s included as standard:
- Cancelling or cutting your trip short if the unexpected happens.
- Travel delays and disruptions.
- Lost or stolen baggage, money or passports.
- Emergency medical treatment and repatriation abroad.
- Winter sports cover (2 trips of up to 21 days when you choose an annual Comprehensive policy).
We also include cover for most pre-existing medical conditions (as long as they’re declared during medical screening) – so your whole family can travel knowing health is protected.
On our comprehensive policies, you can increase cover for single items from €450 to €1000 – perfect for gadgets like tablets or phones
Built-in medical cover
Your medical needs shouldn’t stop you from exploring the world. If you have pre-existing conditions – like asthma, diabetes or high blood pressure – we can normally include them in your travel insurance.
When you get a quote, you’ll complete a short medical questionnaire so we can tailor your cover.
With Staysure, you’ll get:
- emergency medical and repatriation cover included as standard
- 24/7 medical emergency helpline, wherever you are in the world
- A discount on medical loading costs if you have private medical insurance with coverage when abroad of a minimum of €55.000
Even if you already have private medical insurance, it won’t cover trip cancellation, travel delay, missed departures or lost, stolen or damaged baggage. That’s where we step in.
Planning more than one trip?
There are two main types of family travel insurance to choose from:
Single trip travel insurance
Provides cover for your family on one specific holiday – including cancellation, medical emergencies, and lost or stolen belongings.
Annual multi-trip travel insurance
Covers your whole family for multiple trips over 12 months under one policy – with the same protection each time you travel.

Add extras for family holidays
Every family travels differently – so your policy should fit the way you like to holiday. You can make sure everyone’s covered by adding:
- cruise cover – select this when buying if your family holiday includes a cruise, with protection for missed ports, itinerary changes and medical care at sea
- winter sports cover – included with Comprehensive annual policies (2 trips, 21 days combined) or available on single trips for travellers aged 70 and under
- single item cover – extra cover for valuable belongings, up to €1,000 per item
- excess waiver – remove the standard policy excess so you don’t have to contribute to approved claims

Buy family travel insurance early for full cover
When you’re travelling as a family, it’s best to arrange your travel insurance as soon as you’ve booked your holiday. Your cancellation cover begins straight away, so if something happens before you travel, the whole family is protected.
Why buy early as a family?
- Cover starts from the day your policy begins.
- Protection if you need to cancel because of illness, injury or other unexpected events.
- One policy can cover everyone travelling together – no need to arrange separate insurance.
Family travel insurance is designed to keep things simple, so you can focus on planning your holiday rather than worrying about admin. Your cover runs from the day you book until you arrive back home.
Booking a special trip?
If you’re planning a cruise or a longer holiday, you can add extra cover when you take out your policy – so the whole family is protected from the start.

How much does family travel insurance cost?
Family travel insurance is often better value than buying separate policies. The cost depends on:
- your age and the ages of family members
- any pre-existing medical conditions
- where you’re travelling to
- the length of your trip
- optional extras (like cruise or winter sports cover)
For one-off holidays, a family single trip policy may be the cheapest option. But if you’re planning two or more trips in a year, annual multi-trip cover could save you money.
What’s not covered?
Family travel insurance protects you when things don’t go to plan – but some situations aren’t included. Your policy won’t cover:
- travel for planned medical procedures
- incidents linked to alcohol or controlled substances
- choosing not to travel
- pre-existing medical conditions not declared on your policy
- strike action known at the time of booking
- travelling against medical advice
Always check your policy wording carefully so you know exactly what is and isn’t included.
