Can I get travel insurance with medical conditions?

Yes – with Staysure, most people can. Many insurers may limit or exclude cover if you have health conditions, and could leave you with a medical bill if something happens, but we believe your health shouldn’t hold you back.

Having the right cover is essential – and we’re specialists. It’s all we do. With Staysure, you’ll get:

  • protection for declared pre-existing medical conditions
  • emergency medical treatment and hospital stays
  • cancellation cover if you have to cancel or cut your trip short
  • baggage and personal belongings protection
  • 24/7 emergency medical support worldwide

When your health is a factor, we’re here to make sure it doesn’t stop you from seeing the world.

What does medical travel insurance cover?

With Staysure, you’ll have all the essentials of travel insurance – plus tailored medical protection. That means cancellation cover starts as soon as you buy your policy, and everything else is in place from the moment your trip begins.

Your policy includes:

  • emergency medical treatment, hospital stays and medications
  • repatriation to Ireland if a medical emergency means you need to return home early
  • cancelling or cutting your trip short if the unexpected happens
  • travel delays and disruptions
  • lost or stolen baggage, money or passports
  • optional winter sports cover (2 trips, up to 21 days in total, with a Comprehensive policy)

When you get a quote, you’ll complete a simple medical screening so we can tailor your policy. If you already hold private medical insurance, you’ll even receive a 20% discount on medical loading costs.

What counts as a pre-existing medical condition?

A pre-existing medical condition is any health issue where, in the past two years, you’ve had:

  • symptoms
  • treatment or medication
  • investigations or surgery
  • medical appointments

We’ll also ask if you’ve ever had a heart or circulation condition at any point in your life.

Our questions are clear and focused on your current health – not just the name of your condition – so we can provide the most appropriate cover.

What medical conditions can we cover?

We cover a wide range of health conditions – from common to complex. Examples include:

Allergies and respiratory conditions

  • Asthma
  • COPD

Cancer

  • Breast, prostate and other forms (if cleared to travel)

This list isn’t exhaustive – our medical screening tool will guide you through the details so you know exactly what’s included.

Planning more than one trip?

There are two main types of medical travel insurance to choose from:

Single trip travel insurance

Protects you for one specific holiday – including cancellation, emergency medical treatment for declared conditions and lost belongings.

Annual multi-trip travel insurance

Covers multiple trips over 12 months under one policy – with the same medical protection each time you travel.

You can tailor your cover to your health needs, destination and holiday plans. Optional add-ons include cruise cover and winter sports insurance – so your policy is shaped around the way you travel.

Add optional extras to your policy

Tailor your policy with optional extras that match your travel plans:

  • Cruise cover – select this when buying if your trip includes a cruise, with cover for medical treatment at sea, missed ports, itinerary changes and cabin confinement.
  • Winter sports cover – included with Comprehensive annual policies (up to 2 trips, 21 days combined) or available on single trips if you’re 70 or under.
  • Excess waiver – remove the standard policy excess so you won’t pay towards approved claims.
  • Single item cover – extra protection for valuables, increasing the limit to €1,000 per item.
  • 100-day upgrade – extend your Comprehensive policy’s 50-day trip limit to 100 days for one longer holiday (available if you’re 70 or under).

  • Superb, no hassle service.

How does getting covered work?

  • Step 1: Tell us about your trip
Choose single trip, annual or long stay. Tell us who needs cover, where you’re going, and for how long.

  • Step 2: Tell us about your condition(s)
Our medical screening is simple. We’ll ask about recent treatments, appointments, tests, medications or hospital stays – and any history of heart or circulation conditions.

  • Step 3: Get your quote
If we can cover you, we’ll give you a tailored quote straight away. You’ll see all the details, including optional add-ons like winter sports or cruise cover.

Start your cover the day you book

Arrange your travel insurance as soon as you book your holiday, especially if you have a medical condition. Your cancellation cover begins straight away – so if you become unwell or something unexpected happens before you travel, your costs are protected.

Why buy early with medical cover?

  • Cancellation cover starts the day your policy begins.
  • You’re protected if you need to cancel because of illness, injury or a change in your health before you travel.

Your medical travel insurance runs from the day you buy it until the day you return home – so you can travel knowing you’re fully protected.

How much does medical travel insurance cost?

The price of your policy depends on:

  • your age
  • any pre-existing conditions
  • where you’re travelling to
  • trip length
  • optional extras

Single trip cover is often the most affordable if you’re only taking one holiday this year, while annual multi-trip cover could be better value if you travel more often.

What’s not covered?

Medical travel insurance protects you when things don’t go to plan – but some situations aren’t included. Your policy won’t cover:

  • planned medical procedures abroad
  • incidents linked to alcohol or controlled substances
  • choosing not to travel
  • pre-existing conditions not declared on your policy
  • strike action known at the time of booking

Always check your policy documents carefully.
