  • Cover up to age 85

What can travel insurance cover?

Our travel insurance is designed fit your holiday – whether that’s by the beach, exploring a city, enjoying the snow or a cruise.

Every policy includes protect that covers:

  • emergency medical expenses whilst abroad
  • trip cancellation if your holiday ends early
  • lost, stolen, or damaged baggage
  • travel delay and missed departure
  • pregnancy complications (up to a specific stage)
  • most pre-existing medical conditions
  • lost or stolen travel documents including passports

It goes further than local health care cards like the GHIC or EHIC, covering private medical care, repatriation to get you home, and round-the-clock help in English. Plus, most pre-existing conditions can be covered up to age 85 – unlike some insurers, who may not help with pre-existing conditions.

Tailor your policy to suit your needs. Not all holidays are created equal, so whether you’re hopping over to Italy for a weekend, or planning an epic worldwide tour, you’ll want to tailor your policy to cover you properly. Before you take out a policy with us, it’s worth thinking about the areas that you might need to upgrade your level of cover to.

Specialist cover for medical conditions

Unlike many general insurers, our travel insurance can provide specialist cover for most pre-existing medical conditions. If you don’t have the right cover and need help with your existing condition, you may be faced with a large medical bill.

We cover most pre-existing medical conditions up to the age of 85, including those with complex health needs – so you can travel with confidence. From diabetes to asthma to heart conditions and high blood pressure, we’re here to help you travel knowing you’re covered

When you get a quote, you’ll complete a short medical questionnaire so we can tailor your cover to your needs.

  • Medical and repatriation protection included as standard.
  • 24/7 medical emergency helpline, wherever you are in the world.
  • Fast access to approved care abroad, with direct billing to hospitals where possible.

Even if you have a GHIC or EHIC, these only cover limited healthcare and won’t pay for private treatment or getting you home – that’s where we step in.

Flexible cover for single and multi-trip travel

There are two main types of Staysure travel insurance available:

Single trip travel insurance

Cover for one holiday – including cancellation, medical emergencies, loss of baggage, and more. You can travel for up to 104 days on a single trip, depending on your policy.

Annual multi-trip travel insurance

Cover for more than one trip over 12 months under one policy – with the same benefits each time you travel. Annual cover is available for up to 183 days outside Ireland in total.

Tailor your travel insurance with optional extras

You can tailor your travel insurance with optional extras to fit your plans:

  • Cruise cover – protection for missed ports, cruise interruption, cabin confinement, missed shore trips, itinerary changes, and medical emergencies at sea or in port.
  • Winter sports cover – includes protection for unexpected medical costs, unused passes, piste closures, avalanches and lost or damaged ski equipment. Available for single trip travellers aged 70 and under, and included as standard with Comprehensive annual policies (limited to 2 trips per year with a combined maximum of 21 days).*
  • Excess waiver – pay nothing towards any approved claim by removing the standard policy excess. Just add it when you buy your policy, as it can’t be added later on.*
  • Single item cover – increase protection for high-value belongings up to €1,000, compared to the standard €450 per item. You’ll need to make sure you list the item when you buy your policy.*
  • 100-day upgrade – extend a standard 50-day trip to 100 days for one holiday, available for travellers aged 70 and under with our Comprehensive policies only.

Get cover from the moment you book

If you buy your expat travel insurance policy as soon as you book your trip, you’ll be protected right away for:

  • cancelling or cutting your trip short

  • travel delays and disruption

  • lost, damaged or delayed baggage

  • stolen or lost cash

  • emergency medical care with 24/7 support

How to buy travel insurance online

Getting covered is simple:

  1. Tell us about your plans – let us know where you live, your destination, and your travel dates.
  2. Pick your cover level – choose the protection that matches your trip, from basic essentials to more extensive cover.
  3. Customise your policy – add optional extras such as cruise or single item cover.
  4. Tell us about any medical conditions – so you are covered if they cause you issues
  5. Buy and relax – for single trips, your protection starts as soon as you pay. For annual cover, it begins on the date you choose. Your documents will arrive instantly by email.

What’s not covered

While our travel insurance offers extensive protection, there are some situations and costs we can’t cover. These include:

  • undeclared medical conditions – always tell us about your health when you take out your policy so your cover is valid
  • travel against medical advice – if your doctor has said you shouldn’t travel, your policy may be invalid if you travel and try to claim
  • planned or expected medical treatment abroad – we only cover unexpected emergencies, not travel for medical or cosmetic procedures
  • claims related to alcohol or drug use – if these contribute to your illness, injury, or incident
  • trips started before you bought your policy – you must buy before leaving home
  • extreme sports or activities not listed in your policy unless you add the right cover
  • travel to destinations with an active government ‘advise against all travel’ warning – unless specifically covered in your policy wording
