What is expat travel insurance?
If you live in Spain, France or Portugal, expat travel insurance is designed to give you holiday cover that works wherever you go. It protects you for emergencies abroad – from medical treatment and repatriation to trip cancellations, lost baggage and more.
Unlike local health cards such as the GHIC or EHIC, it goes further by covering private medical care, getting you home if needed, and giving you round-the-clock support in English. With most pre-existing conditions covered up to age 85, it’s trusted protection that helps you travel with confidence.

Tailor your policy to suit your needs. Not all holidays are created equal, so whether you’re hopping over to Italy for a weekend, or planning an epic worldwide tour, you’ll want to tailor your expat policy to cover you properly. Before you take out a policy with us, it’s worth thinking about the areas that you might need to upgrade your level of cover to.
Specialist cover for English-speaking expats
Wherever you’re heading, our expat travel insurance makes it easier – with tailored medical cover and flexible options for the way you travel.
Medical protection for pre-existing conditions
We cover most pre-existing medical conditions – even for older travellers or those with complex health needs – so you can explore with confidence. From asthma and diabetes to heart conditions and high blood pressure, we’re here to help you travel safely.
When you get a quote, you’ll complete a short medical questionnaire so we can tailor your cover to your needs.
- Medical and repatriation protection included as standard.
- 24/7 medical emergency helpline, wherever you are in the world.
- Fast access to approved care abroad, with direct billing to hospitals where possible.
Even if you have a GHIC or EHIC, these only cover limited state healthcare and won’t pay for private treatment or getting you home – that’s where we step in.
Flexible cover for single and multi-trip travel
There are two main types of Staysure travel insurance available for English-speaking expats living in Spain, France, or Portugal:
Single trip travel insurance
Cover for one holiday – including trip cancellation, medical emergencies, baggage loss, and more. You can travel for up to 104 days on a single trip, depending on your policy.
Annual multi-trip travel insurance
Cover for multiple trips over 12 months under one policy – with the same benefits each time you travel. Annual cover is available for up to 183 days abroad in total.

Tailor your expat travel insurance with optional extras
You can tailor your expat travel insurance with optional extras designed to fit your holiday plans:
- Cruise cover – protection for missed ports, cabin confinement, cruise interruption, missed shore trips, itinerary changes, and medical emergencies at sea or in port.
- Winter sports cover – includes protection for unexpected medical costs, lost or damaged ski equipment, unused passes, piste closures and avalanches. Available for single trip travellers aged 70 and under, and included as standard with Comprehensive annual policies (limited to 2 trips per year with a combined maximum of 21 days).*
- Excess waiver – pay nothing towards any approved claim by removing the standard policy excess. Just add it when you buy your policy, as it can’t be added later.*
- Single item cover – increase protection for high-value belongings up to €1,000, compared to the standard €450 per item. You’ll need to list the item when you buy your policy.*
- 100-day upgrade – extend a standard 50-day trip to 100 days for one holiday, available for travellers aged 70 and under on Comprehensive policies only.
Get cover from the moment you book
If you buy your expat travel insurance policy as soon as you book your trip, you’ll be protected right away for:
- cancelling or cutting your trip short
- emergency medical care with 24/7 support
- travel delays and disruption
- lost, damaged or delayed baggage
- stolen or lost cash

How to buy expat travel insurance online
Getting covered is simple:
- Tell us about your plans – let us know where you live, your destination, and your travel dates.
- Pick your cover level – choose the protection that matches your trip, from basic essentials to more extensive cover.
- Customise your policy – add optional extras such as cruise or single item cover.
- Buy and relax – for single trips, your protection starts as soon as you pay. For annual cover, it begins on your chosen start date. Your documents will arrive instantly by email.
What’s not covered
While our travel insurance for expats offers extensive protection, there are some situations and costs we can’t cover. These include:
- undeclared medical conditions – always tell us about your health when you take out your policy so your cover is valid
- travel against medical advice – if your doctor has said you shouldn’t travel, your policy may be invalid
- planned or expected medical treatment abroad – we only cover unexpected emergencies, not travel for medical or cosmetic procedures
- claims related to alcohol or drug use – if these contribute to your illness, injury, or incident
- trips started before you bought your policy – you must buy before leaving home
- extreme sports or activities not listed in your policy unless you add the right cover
- travel to destinations with an active government ‘advise against all travel’ warning – unless specifically covered in your policy wording
